Burden of infectious diseases in aging adults (50+)
The objective of Work Package 1 is to quantify the direct burden of infectious diseases in an ageing population (50 years +) across European countries.
In Europe, data on the burden of infectious diseases may come from a multitude of potential sources. The availability of such data and the potential to make linkages varies greatly across Europe and no single setting will be representative of the entire continent. For this reason, we propose to run a pilot study in two regions with high potential of capturing a near-complete picture of the infectious disease burden at the individual level and yet significantly different in terms of data sources, linkage mechanisms and also geographical, socio-economical and organizational differences. Building on this experience, the applicability of the pilot programme to different environments across Europe will be explored.
The goal is to deliver a more complete understanding of the epidemiology, risk factors and burden of disease of existing vaccine-preventable (VP) and upcoming potential vaccine-preventable (PVP) infectious diseases in these populations via a consistent, comprehensive data collection approach that builds on and extends existing information.
